Reputation is not a source
An organisation writing about its own director is not independent evidence, however accurate it is. We hold cases back on that basis, including ones we would like to publish.
August 2026
The rule is mechanical: a claim cannot count as documented if every source behind it is the subject or the subject’s own organisation. It is a blunt instrument and it catches things that are almost certainly true. We would rather be slow than build an archive whose standard bends toward the people we find interesting.
What this rests on
Facts below are read out of the archive at the moment this page is built. Our reading of them is labelled separately.
The Decision
Abandon a working, revenue-positive product ahead of the shift, and carry forward only the insight underneath it — that most offline businesses operate without data.
This decision publishes because two outlets with no stake in the company reported it. Had the only account been the company’s own, the case would be held — the claim would not be less true, only less carried.
