The fastest route usually runs through something already in people’s hands.
Why this matters
Adoption is the expensive part. Anything already in daily use has cleared that cost, and building onto it converts an apparent limitation into the shortest available path.

The fact that reads as an obstacle — everyone is already committed to another tool — is the same fact that makes the tool the best possible foundation.

Convert her own academic research into a filed patent and a trading business rather than leave it in the literature.
The asset already existed as published research. The decision was to carry it into production rather than to begin something new.

Abandon a working, revenue-positive product ahead of the shift, and carry forward only the insight underneath it — that most offline businesses operate without data.
What survives the shutdown is not the hardware but the understanding it produced. The existing asset here is knowledge, and it is the thing carried forward.
